All of us have pivotal moments in our own lives. Something happens, and from then on, nothing is the same.
There are obviously the beautiful, positive ones like a marriage or the birth of a kid…
However additionally, there are the minutes which could be more frightening. A loved one’s passing. A identification. An injury.
And as I get older (and hopefully a bit wiser) I have noticed one thing over and over – exactly what defines individuals is how they react to these moments.
We can’t always control what happens to people. We get ill. A parent or spouse dies. We fall down. But we can dominate the way we react.
Nowadays, we’re extremely eager to share the story of our friend Cavin. Cavin suffered a traumatic head injury which doctors said must have murdered him and dropped down.
Not merely did Cavin not die – he’s now flourishing in a way he never previously believed possible. It all came down to the way he responded to his harm.
The most important thing that he did? He changed the way that he ate into fuel his brain.
Traumatic brain injuries are something we do not talk about enough – and something we surely do not talk being linked to nutrition – so I am overjoyed to get Cavin talk in their words SCD and diet have been essential in his recovery process.
It was just six years ago that I had been lying in a hospital bed, unable to walk, talk or eat, wondering what my future would hold. I really do much more than anyone dared to trust Now.
Nutrition was key in my healing from the fall that left me in a coma having a serious traumatic brain injury (TBI) and just a 10% likelihood of ever emerging from a persistent vegetative state. I share my story for a source of confidence and inspiration.
I Never Thought I’d Care About Nutrition For The Brain
I grew up eating what you would look at a standard Italian-American diet. My grandma’s lasagna has been my favourite comfort food! When I lived in nyc in my early 20s, pizza was a regular staple of my daily diet plan.
I never would have imagined I would one day write a novel about optimal nutrition for brain function and fix. I couldn’t imagine I would stop eating these meals which I’d be encouraging other people to cut these types of gluten-containing comfort foods out of their diet, also. I didn’t plan it dropped it. Literally.
The Fall That Started It All
In 2011, I fell 20 feet from a rooftop water tower at New York City. My mind struck against a steel beam over the way down before stepping on the rooftop below.
I was promptly hurried to the hospital and put on life support. While in a coma, an MRI showed a serious diffuse axonal injury, which is one of the most devastating types of brain injury.
Statistically, over 90 percent of patients with this injury never recover consciousness, and most that do, often remain in a persistent vegetative state.
I had been comatose for weeks and was not able to eat, walk, or speak for months. I was breathing through a tube in my throat, receiving processed hospital practice that was liquid and my left hand was flexed inward.
Before my fall, I had been a twenty-seven-year-old musician and entrepreneur making music and sharing it around the world. My future was not able to say the least.
I was not supposed to live , however, I did.
In fact, my recovery has been called miraculous by a few.
Several months after my injury, I left some nutrient changes, cutting out those favorite comfort foods (sorry, grandmother!) And adding in meals with nutrients that are brain-supportive.
Unexpectedly, I started regaining mental clarity. I employed that clarity everything I could do to give myself the best chance recovery and why nourishment made a gap. That is when I found SCD Lifestyle throughout the podcasts and also all the other Terrific tools on the Site.
My New Purpose In Life
Since then, I have devoted my entire life to studying metabolism, neuro-metabolism, nutrition, neuroscience, neuroplasticity, and related theories, while reaching out to doctors, researchers, professionals, and neuroscientists, to understand everything I could to maximize my mind function and healing.
I started a blog and then a podcast, AdventuresinBrainInjury.com, where I interview doctors, professionals, investigators, and others included in neurorehabilitation and mind function.
I based Feed an Brain as an outlet to discuss practices to encourage brain health, including the kinds of nutritional changes that created such a difference in my own recovery.
Over A Full Recovery
Through everything I have discovered, I was able not only to survive, but also to flourish.
I have recovered beyond all expectations. I drive, ride bikes, camp, play guitar, sing, swim, and practice martial arts! I even do back flips off of boards!
I genuinely believe in the mantra”Food is Medicine” and that I live true to it. I do not see my nutrient”limits” as anxiety, however, as a mindful decision that permits me to live my very best life.
Sharing My Experience With Others
The TBI hit on a restart button and directed me into my life’s work. I’m a podcaster, blogger, trainer, speaker, and author, with more substantial plans to come.
The book I am publishing in December is the culmination of everything I’ve heard about nourishment through this trip. It is called How to Feed a Brain: Nutrition for Optimal Brain Function and Fix .
I strive to show people the way to making meaningful food decisions that will include specific nutrients required for our mind functions, and I give them helpful tools to make the process simpler.
I’m eager to help others find the courage to make successful changes in their wellbeing and change their own lives for the greater one bite at one time.
That is a fairly incredible story, right? It truly blew me away and I am honored to understand Cavin.
